La Maison de la danse
de Lyon

Its high, rounded glass façade has long been a striking part of the Lyon culture scene. Yet the Maison de la Danse is also something of a landmark for the dance field as a whole. Initially located on the heights of the city’s Croix-Rousse district when it opened in 1980, the institution grew rapidly and moved to its current building in the 8th district twelve years later, under the impetus of its passionate director Guy Darmet, who also initiated the Biennale de la Danse de Lyon. In 2011, he passed the torch to Dominique Hervieu, who remained at the helm for 11 years. Last year, Portugal’s Tiago Guedes became only the third director of the Maison de la Danse, with a major challenge ahead: the completion of an additional venue, the Ateliers de la Danse. For the ongoing video series “Dance Places,” which offers viewers a “tour” of an artistic director’s vision through the location where they work, Guedes takes us inside his hospitality-focused plans.

Since July 2022, Tiago Guedes is the director of the Maison de la Danse and the Biennale de la Danse in Lyon. He was dancer and choreographer before becoming in 2014 the Artistic Director of the Teatro Municipal do Porto and Director of the Department of Performing Arts of the City of Porto (Portugal). He created in 2016 the Festival Dias da Dança and he also founded Campus Paulo Cuhna e Silva, a center for residencies and artistic creation. Tiago Guedes sees programming as an artistic, political and social act. He proposes an opening to all dances at Maison de la Dance, to all discoveries at Biennale de Lyon and to all practices at the future Ateliers de la Danse.
